What are nouns?

Nouns are words which are names for all kind of things. There are two main types of nouns:

1. Proper Nouns.

Proper Nouns are special names of people, places, animals and things. (e.g. Ali, Tanjong Malim, Comel, January).

Proper Nouns start with capital letters.

Proper Nouns do not have a or an in front of them.

Most Proper Nouns do not have the before them.

2. Common Nouns.

There are several types of common nouns:

i. Countable Nouns are names for things that we can see or touch and things we can count, e.g. table, car, cat.

ii. Uncountable Nouns are names for things we can see and touch but cannot count, e.g. water, air, sugar.

iii. Collective Nouns are names for a number of people, animals or things that belong together, e.g. a group of boys, a bouquet of flowers.

iv. Abstract Nouns are names for thins that we cannot see or touch, e.g. care, fear, language.

v. Compound Nouns are names made up of two or more words, e.g. exercise book, classroom, ice-cream.
